We expect all children to attend school regularly and on time. Even short or occasional absences can affect a child’s learning and progress.
Missing school may not seem like a big deal, but the impact adds up. For example, being absent just two days each month adds up to four weeks of lost learning a year – that’s more than a full year missed between Year 1 and Year 13.
Every school day matters. Each day missed makes it harder to catch up and can lead to lower progress in reading, writing and numeracy. Regular attendance also helps children to build strong friendships and social skills.
Why good attendance matters
Coming to school every day helps children to:
- Become ambitious, capable learners who are ready to learn throughout their lives.
- Grow into enterprising, creative contributors who can take an active part in life and work.
- Develop as ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the wider world.
- Be healthy, confident individuals who can lead happy, fulfilling lives as valued members of society.
Excellent attendance gives every child the best possible start in life.
If a child does not attend school regularly, the school may need to raise safeguarding concerns about their welfare or progress.
Reporting absences
Children should only be absent from school for illness or a family emergency.
Please contact the school on the first day of absence to let us know why your child is away.
Being on time
Arriving at school punctually is vital for your child’s learning and helps with the smooth running of the school day.
To support families, the school offers a free Breakfast Club from 8:15 a.m.
Details of holidays, events and training days are shared with parents through our weekly newsletter.
We work closely with local authority attendance officers, and referrals may be made if attendance remains a concern.
If you are experiencing any difficulties with your child’s attendance or punctuality, please contact the school – we’re here to help.

HOLIDAY REQUESTS
Holiday Requests
We kindly ask parents and carers to arrange family holidays during school holidays wherever possible, and not during term time.
If there are exceptional circumstances that mean your child needs to be taken out of school during term time, please arrange to meet with Mr Harri Edwards, Headteacher.
You can do this by phoning the school on 01269 841 563
or by emailing: admin@llannon.ysgolccc.cymru
All holiday requests must be submitted electronically by scanning the QR code on the school’s main reception door. Requests will be unauthorised unless you receive a response from the Headteacher. Please ensure your request is sent well in advance, so there is time for discussion if needed and for a written response to be issued.
Please note: It is the parent’s responsibility to ensure that the written response is received before the holiday begins.
Guidelines
When considering a request for a term-time holiday, the Headteacher will take into account:
- The age of the child
- The time of year of the proposed holiday
- The length and purpose of the absence
- The impact on continuity of learning
- The child’s overall attendance pattern
- The child’s academic progress
- Any guidance from Welsh Government
These will be balanced with:
- The family’s individual circumstances
- The wishes and views of the parents/carers
- The purpose of the holiday
Please note: This list is not exhaustive. The Headteacher may also consider any other factors that are relevant to the decision.
If a holiday request is approved based on the circumstances, it will be authorised.
However, please remember that it will still affect your child’s overall attendance percentage — only being present in school can count as attendance on the register.
